Mary Gregory glass is charming enamelled glass, popular in Victorian times. Its distinctive feature is the painted and enamelled scenes of Victorian children in silhouette, dressed in their best clothes, playing & having fun. Mary Gregory (an enameller, active 1870s-1880s, decorating glass for the Boston & Sandwich Glass Co) has become a generic name for all glass within the Victorian age enamelled with figures of children from around 1850 to 1900, from both Europe and America. Paradoxically, the finest examples of Mary Gregory glass are Bohemian from factories like Hahn & Moser, & date from the 1850s onwards. The enamelling on this piece is some of the best of this type I've seen with a great deal of detail. Sold to me as a vase, I think it was a biscuit barrel with a metal rim, handle and lid, or a glass lid - the latter more likely as it was probably broken although there are nibbles almost all the way around the rim, which is what made me think metal originally. Would look great with a bunch of old fashioned roses.
