About this listing
A fabulous pair of Japanese Satsuma earthenware cups from the Meiji period (1868–1912) featuring finely detailed polychrome enamel and gilt decoration. Each cup depicting a procession of samurai (warriors) against a landscape backdrop, complemented by an ornate gilded dragon- or scroll-molded handle. Marked to the base with a traditional Satsuma mark in a rectangular seal. The cross within a circle is the Shimazu family crest (the ruling clan of the Satsuma province), which is the definitive indicator of authentic Satsuma pottery. The saucers are not original to the cups but make a good enough match for display. The mark at bottom right indicate the maker is Takichi Hododa, a highly regarded master ceramicist and prominent merchant based out of Yokohama. Active during the late 19th-century Meiji era, his workshop specialized in creating premium, intricately painted, and heavily gilded "Yokohama Satsuma" exclusively for international export markets. Rather than everyday tourist trinkets, Hododa pieces are known for high-quality figural paintings, lively composition, and exceptional decorative appeal. Approx 9.5cm across the top and 5cm high, NB: I am currently listing items on behalf, from my father's extensive antique collection - https://www.trademe.co.nz/MyTradeMe/Sell/Current.aspx **I do NOT offer to watchers, if you want it you will need to bid ** Contact within 3 days, payment within 5 unless by prior arrangement please ** Happy to send non breakable items overseas (please ask if you are unsure), otherwise NZ resident bidders only please.
