New Zealand : *Trade advertising token used for trade purposes by butterfly tea's between 1902 to 1915 Butterfly tea's started business in 1868 in Auckland [NZ] Made of celluloid [early plastic] Note. Only one has appeared for sale in an auction house in Australia with a $35 reserve and sold for $40.25 but was some years back with a grade of VF This example is near perfect apart from some light paper stains and the rust on the metal reverse edging. *Interesting piece of NZ history and probably never see another.[ weren't meant to last in excess of 100+ years.] Brown, Barrett and Co. Butterfly Teas The Brown, Barrett Co. was a New Zealand firm that traced it roots back to 1868. It produced a variety of products, including Butterfly Teas. This 7/8 inch celluloid is a real beauty. Brown, Barrett and Co was a longstanding foodstuffs company that was present in New Zealand from the late 1860s until the mid- 1950s. Their biggest trade hands down for many decades was tea and coffee; but of course like all the ubiquitous “coffee and spice merchants” of the era – also dealt in a variety of peppers and sundry other taste bud- ticklers that were utilized to dress up dreary (and no doubt often slightly stale) meals. *See photo for extra detail & the item winning bidder will receive. *2nd photo showing reverse side of the item in the first photo.
