William Crimsworth leaves an unhappy position in England to pursue a different future in Brussels, where teaching offers the possibility of earning a living through his own abilities. The school environment brings him into contact with powerful personalities, social expectations and relationships in which admiration can be difficult to distinguish from calculation. His growing regard for Frances Henri, a thoughtful young woman pursuing independence of her own, gives the story an intimate emotional centre. Narrated by William, Charlotte Bronte's first completed novel explores work, self-respect and the slow development of trust between people who cannot rely on wealth or easy acceptance. Published after her death, The Professor reflects her interest in education, foreign settings and the inner lives of characters determined to make a place for themselves. AFTERPAY AVAILABLE!
